Glossary Of terms

Originally Sin Moo Hapkido was thought by Dojunim in his HQ in California, USA, using English terminology and English numbers. The followings are limited Korean terms that are commonly used in Sin Moo Hapkido Dojangs and should be familiar to all students. Many of these words have multiple meanings, but the ones listed here are the definitions used by Dojunim Ji Han Jae.

  • Dahn - degree of black belt.
  • Danjon - an area in the low abdomen about three fingerbreadths below the navel. It serves as a reservoir for Ki development and a place Where one presses to consolidate Ki during practice.
  • Danjon Breathing - An important exercise in Sin Moo Hapkido that teaches one to consolidate and move their Ki.
  • DO - the way.
  • Dobak - martial arts uniform.
  • Dojang - Korean martial art school Doju (nim) ~title of Ji, Han Jae meaning honorable founder of the way.
  • Hap - to bring together, as in bringing the mind and body together. It can also mean to gather and combine.
  • Ki - often referred to as energy, but is the physical manifestation of breath and the power of the mind and body working together.
  • Kup - colored belt degree.
  • Moo - martial art or martial way of life.
  • Samilsingo - ancient Korean text that deals with the development and organization of the universe. Serves as a foundational text for Sinmoo Hapkido.
  • Seon - Korean Zen.
  • Sin - higher mind and spirit.
  • Joon Bi - Ready

  • Cha Ryut - Attention

  • Kyung Ye - Bow

  • Shi Jak - Start

  • Joong Ji - Stop.

  • Jung Zwa - Kneeling Down

  • Mook Nyum - Meditation

  • Banpum - Return  

  • Kwan Jang Nim Ke Kyung Ye Baro - Bow to the teacher/Master.
